Details

The AFSA Goes for Gold Conference Subsidy Program was designed to give students the opportunity to expand their network and business knowledge by participating in competition and conferences across the nation.

Students must apply to the program on an individual basis. Candidates that are chosen to be a part of this program will be matched as best as possible to their conference preferences that have been noted in their application. The number of applicants that will be chosen for each conference will vary depending on the amount of interest.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of applicants, AFSA is not able to offer all applicants a subsidy. Only chosen applicants will be contacted. Coordination of teams will be based on the preferences of successful applicants and determined by AFSA Goes for Gold program organizers. Once teams have been formed, practices may be requested in order to provide delegates with information about the conference and tips on how to succeed at a case competition.

AFSA will subsidize 80% of students’ costs, provided they have paid their AFSA levy. The costs that will be covered by this program include travel arrangements and delegate fees charged by external conference organizers. The expected costs of each conference are currently posted in our AFSA Goes for Gold Conference Bank, but are subject to change. Only conferences listed in this Conference Bank are eligible for the 80% subsidy.

AFSA will also subsidize conference costs for non AFSA Goes for Gold conferences provided they are legitimate conferences with a proven track record and meaningful competition. To apply for these subsidies, students need to directly contact the Vice President of External Relations. The subsidy for these conferences is a maximum of 50% of the travel and conference costs. Exact reimbursement is up to the discretion of AFSA executives based on available budget. Note: AFSA does NOT offer subsidies for conferences hosted by University of Waterloo organizations (e.g. UWAC, hEDGE, UWFA, Ascend, etc.).

In terms of travel methods, AFSA will only reimburse reasonably cost efficient methods of travel. Public transit (e.g. GO Transit, TTC, etc.) and chartered services (e.g. VIA Rail, Greyhound, etc.) will always be eligible for reimbursement. In the case where a delegate voluntarily chooses to utilize a more costly method of transportation (e.g. Uber, rideshare, own car), AFSA holds the right to provide a reimbursement based on the lowest cost alternative to reach the same destination. AFSA does NOT abide by mileage rates as provided by the University of Waterloo or any other source. If you are unsure about travel reimbursements please contact the Vice President of External Relations.

The application is simple…

  • Be willing to compete in a few unique competencies!

  • Demonstrate the willingness to learn from the experience!

  • Demonstrate the ability to represent your school the right way!
