Call for Applications for the Student Investment Team for the Fall 2013 Term

*This is a reminder email about the opportunity to apply for the SAF Student Investment Team.  We have added an online application component to do a trial on streamlining the process.  The application can now be found on the LEARN site under "My SAF Community" look under Assessments to the Survey function and the application document is called "Student Investment Team Application 2013".  We would like you to complete this as well as sending in your documents so that we are sure to have the information that we need to process your application.  The School’s Investment Fund was launched in the spring 2012 term with an initial investment of $50,000. An additional $50,000 was available for investment in the winter 2013 term. To know more about the fund, please visit http://saf.uwaterloo.ca/SAF/SAFInvestmentFund.html. The performance link at the site has the team presentations to the Investment Fund’s Advisory Board.

We invite applications for the Student Investment Team from students in their 3A or higher study terms in the fall 2013 term in the AFM, CFM, Mathematics & CA, and Biotechnology & CA programs. To be eligible to apply, students should have completed Managerial Finance I (AFM 271/AFM 273) or Corporate Finance I (AFM 272).

Call for Applications for CFA Institute Awareness Scholarships

As a participant in the CFA University Recognition Program, the School of Accounting and Finance will be recommending 5 students forCFA Awareness scholarships for the December 2013 and June 2014 CFA Level I exam. These scholarships are awarded by the CFA Institute and are primarily available to undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Accounting and Finance.

On behalf of the School’s CFA Scholarship Committee, I am pleased to announce the process by which we will be recommending the students to receive the CFA Institute Awareness Scholarships for the December 2013 and June 2014 Level 1 exam sitting.  The committee is comprised of Professors Andrew Ecclestone (CFA), Craig Geoffrey (CFA), and Ranjini Jha (CFA).

BENEFITS

For the current exam offering, the CFA Program enrollment fee (if applicable) is waived. Scholarship applicants pay a discounted registration fee that includes the e-book curriculum. Scholarships cannot be deferred to another exam offering. For further information, please refer to the website:

CRITERIA

To be considered for these scholarships, you must be:

1) A registered undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Waterloo in the School of Accounting and Finance.

2) In your final year of undergraduate studies or in full-time graduate studies.  This is defined as being within 12 months of completion of your degree requirements.

3) Registered to write or will be registering for the December 2013 or June 2014 CFA Level 1 Exam

4) A first time CFA Level 1 exam writer

POSITION SUMMARY The (2) Student Co-Chairs will work together to lead the creation, development, and execution of the 2nd annual University of Waterloo Leadership Starts Here Conference. The main responsibilities of the Co-Chairs will include: • Finalizing and posting the Student Conference Coordinator positions for hire (to be completed in consultation with the Student Leadership Development Coordinator in the Student Success Office – up to 8 Student Conference Coordinators will be hired); • Participating in the selection, orientation, and mentoring of the Student Conference Coordinator team; • Providing strong leadership to guide and engage the Student Conference Coordinator team in establishing the direction and vision of the 2014 Conference and successfully completing required tasks and projects.

NATURE AND SCOPE • The Student Success Office believes in the value of leadership development opportunities for current student leaders at the University of Waterloo. This includes offering of an annual dynamic and engaging Leadership Starts Here Conference that is runby students, for students from across uWaterloo. • The Student Co-Chairs, overseeing the Student Coordinators, will represent the main organizing body of the Leadership Starts Here Conference. The Co-Chairs must be experienced and enthusiastic student leaders with a passion for leadership development in all of its forms. Experience as a conference coordinator, particularly of the first annual Leadership Starts Here Conference, is an asset. • The Student Co-Chairs must possess strong leadership, organizational, decision-making, and communication skills in order to effectively support the execution of the conference. Furthermore, they must have skill and experience in mentoring or coaching peers. • The Student Co-Chairs must interact with and maintain a strong rapport with their fellow Co-Chairperson, the Student Success Office, the Student Coordinator team, and many campus partners and other student leaders on campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Student Co-Chairs will be required to: • Participate in the recruitment and selection of the Student Coordinator team; • Co-lead and support the Student Coordinator team’s development and planning of Conference programming and logistics; • Schedule and facilitate weekly Student Coordinator team and individual meetings – draft meeting agendas and document meeting minutes; • Meet weekly with the Student Success Office’s Student Leadership Development Coordinator to provide briefings on Conference progress and team dynamics, and seek support and guidance as necessary; • Fill any gaps that exist in Conference task or project completion, and/or support Student Coordinators in their completion of specific portfolio items as necessary; • Provide regular feedback to Student Coordinators; • Complete other tasks that may arise.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY Supervision Exercised: • The Student Co-Chairs will lead and support the Student Coordinator team and will oversee all aspects of the Conference. Supervision Received: • The Student Co-Chairs will be supported by the Student Leadership Development Coordinator (a full-time, professional UW Staff member who works out of the Student Success Office).

QUALIFICATIONS A successful candidate will: • Be a registered full-time University of Waterloo student (Co-op or Non Co-op). • Have an awareness and understanding of the development needs of student leaders on the UW campus. • Possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills. • Exhibit professional communication skills. • Be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed, maintaining flexibility as necessary to ensure successful project completion. • Be self-motivated and have the ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment and effectively meet deadlines. • Have experience in event planning and project management, and be skilled in executing cross-departmental initiatives. • Possess excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills, and maintain a strong commitment to student leadership development. • Have two or more terms of experience as a student leader at UW, in any capacity. • Have previous team-facilitation experience and possess the ability to motivate and inspire others through effective leadership. Experience as a conference coordinator, particularly of the first annual Leadership Starts Here Conference, is an asset.

LEARNING OUTCOMES Co-chairs will use and further develop competency in the areas of: • Coaching and mentoring • Team-building and understanding and influencing group dynamics • Event planning and project management • Meeting facilitation • Networking and collaboration with diverse campus partners and stakeholders
